The IYPT/Physclub

The IYPT group is a group of students who are practicing for the International Young Physicist Tournament in 2010. The IYPT is a competition in which the teams are given a set of physics related phenomena to research and form theories. The group must the present a Power Point presentation showing their theory and present their "case" findings. At the tournament, another team can then question the validity of the results and also challenge the theory put forward. Formal questions for IYPT 2010 will be released in October 2009, but the group has been researching other interesting physics phenomena like Faraday's Waves forming on corn flour in a speaker, and "Singing Pipes".
As a group, we enjoy doing research because it is a hands-on way of learning in which we can reinforce the knowledge we gain in class. It also gives us an idea of the practical application of physics. We are encouraged to build and research the experiments ourselves and we go above and beyond the curriculum to gain interesting insights into physics in the real world.
Our goal for IYPT is to go to the Regional Competitions and hopefully qualify for the National Tournament. In the meantime, however we are enjoying our experiments and look forward to receiving the questions in October.         Laura Year 12

Tuesday Study Group

Every Tuesday, after school has finished for the day an enthusiastic group of students meet in the college library with their teachers for extra tuition. The subjects covered vary from Science and Maths to English. This group has proved very popular with over 40 students attending on a regular basis.
