At Sacred Heart College students have the opportunity to participate in many extracurricular musical activities.
Instrumental and Vocal Tuition
Instrumental and vocal tuition is held during the school day. We have a fabulous line-up of music teachers who come to our school once a week to teach their specialty instrument.
We offer lessons in violin, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano, and voice.
Students come out of class for one 30 minute lesson per week. The lesson times are rotated so students miss only a small portion of each subject. Arrangements can be made for senior students to be taught during specified times, such as study periods, before or after school, or lunchtime.
Each of our tutors are active participants in the greater Wellington music scene and have years of teaching experience:
Paddy Bleakley: guitar
Olivia Campion: drums
Frankie Curac: saxophone, clarinet and flute
Cath Haley: singing
Rebecca Harvey: violin, viola, cello and double bass
Julian Kirgan: brass, bass guitar and guitar
Georgia Jamieson Emms: private singing
Sonya Pearce: private piano
Carole Taylor: private piano
Sacred Heart College offers lessons in two ways, Ministry funded lessons and Private funded lessons.
The school has a limited number of Ministry of Education funded itinerant lesson hours.
Preference for Ministry of Education funded lessons is given to those students who show enthusiasm and commitment to Music both in the classroom and through extra-curricular music activities at Sacred Heart. These lessons are taught in small groups of 2-7 students. This provides a social and friendly environment to begin a new instrument.
Private lessons give students the opportunity to have their musical ability nurtured and developed. These lessons help grow each student into a sensitive, disciplined and confident person. We strongly encourage Option Music students (Year 10 – 13) to take private lessons, to receive in-depth preparation for the academic Music course.
Note: these lessons are also available to any student at Sacred Heart College, whether they are taking Music as a subject or not.
Instruments for hire:
The school has violins, celli, flutes, clarinets trumpets and saxophones for hire if you require it. The cost is $100 per year.
School Music Groups
To further nurture each student's musical ability we offer a wide range of music groups. Playing in a group is a fun way to help motivate students through musical interactions with peers. Singing and playing together grows students' musical knowledge, helps refine technique, develops leadership skills and learn to have fun with music.
